Combat tips

  1. Aim for the head, but track parry timing — Headshots deal ~3x Silencer 9 pistol damage on Standard, but if a zombie is mid-lunge, parry first and counter for guaranteed stagger.
  2. Hemorrhetic Injectors are one-shot kills from behind on most enemies — including The Chef.
  3. The MSBG 500 W870 Police shotgun two-shots most zombies at point-blank but wastes ammo at mid-range. Save shells for crowd control.
  4. Marksman 1A is the universal boss weapon — Plant 43 flower, Victor Gideon head pustules, Titan Spinner head, Mr. X heart.
  5. The default Hatchet's parry window is too tight on Insanity — upgrade to Mortal Edge at every Supply Box.
  6. Grenades break boss armor — Blister-borne cysts, Victor pustule clusters, Mr. X armor. Save 2-3 per boss arena.
  7. Knife durability resets every save on the Infinite Knife unlock (Safe #5 reward).
  8. Sprinting cancels all reload animations — useful for retreating mid-reload, but you lose the loaded round.

Exploration tips

  1. Always tag save rooms — they double as item-box checkpoints. The typewriter ribbon resource is unlimited on Casual/Standard.
  2. Investigate every glowing object — files, herbs, gunpowder, and hidden Mr. Raccoons all glow faintly.
  3. Backtrack after picking up new keys — every key unlocks 2-4 previously-inaccessible rooms with significant loot.
  4. The Care Center has 8 missable files tied to chapter progression. See our missables guide.
  5. Map markers persist across deaths — placed markers stay even if you die before saving. Useful for tracking incomplete collectibles.
  6. Camera lighting reveals secrets — toggle the in-game flashlight rapidly in dark rooms to spot wall-mounted safes and hidden niches.

Crafting tips

  1. Always craft Requiem rounds last — they need High-Grade Gunpowder + Chemical Flask, which are scarce. Save for Victor Gideon.
  2. Combine green + red herbs for the most efficient healing.
  3. Don't waste Hemorrhetic Injectors on regular zombies — reserve for instant boss kills.
  4. The crafting bench unlocks new recipes after each boss — check after every boss kill.
  5. Gunpowder limit is 99 per type — craft to cap before transitioning chapters.

Inventory management

  1. Inventory slots are tight — drop the default Combat Knife once you have Mortal Edge Hatchet (Hatchet does both knife + parry).
  2. Use the item box every save room — store excess ammo, carry only 1 First Aid Spray.
  3. Carry exactly 1 grenade per boss arena — more is wasted, fewer means missing key armor breaks.
  4. Key items don't count against inventory cap — collect them aggressively.
  5. The Eye Spy Charm doesn't take a slot — equip permanently for Insanity (auto-saves from one fatal hit per save).

Parry mastery tips

  1. The parry window is the red flash on enemy weapons — press L1/LB exactly when the flash appears, not before.
  2. Mortal Edge Hatchet has a 30% larger parry window than the default.
  3. The Commander has 4 parryable attacks and 2 unparryable (grab, charge dash). Memorize the difference.
  4. Successful parry = ~1.5s damage window — long enough for 1 W870 Police shotgun blast or 2 Marksman shots.

Insanity-specific tips

  1. Eye Spy Charm is non-negotiable — saves you from one fatal hit per save.
  2. Repair body armor at every Supply Box — Insanity damage values make broken armor lethal in 2 hits.
  3. Save in 3+ slots throughout the run — rotate to avoid soft-locking on mid-fight states.
  4. The Girl boss one-shots if you reload in shadow — always reload inside a lit zone.
  5. Plant 43's seed projectiles deal 40-60% HP per hit — never stand still.
  6. Infinite Ammo trivializes Insanity — Safe #5 reward (Infinite Knife) + trophy completion unlocks Infinite Requiem.
